Wow! 2.5 years ago I was asking to orient a young novice RN to the ED. I spoke to my daughter (DNP, CRNA) and asked for advice. She said "mom, be nice. You were new once and now you have so much to offer." So after months of tough love, patience, and showing of respect I can honestly say that after last night's shift, there was proof that all efforts had paid off. Tyler is the stellar ED RN professional I knew he could be. The loop is now closed. As I was about to receive my 7th patient, in an already overwhelming assignment, Tyler, without hesitation, jumped right in. "Don't worry, I have your back." Tyler handed the difficult patient with psychosocial and behavioral issues with grace and dignity. He even arced it up to the APCM for assistance. He remained calm and respectful in an adverse situation. A few hours later, a patient with severe angioedema arrived. Again, Tyler, at my side, "We got this". We worked together- IVs, assessments, meds, etc. The patient rapidly decompensated and needed an emergency airway. Tyler went to work again, placing additional IVs, emergency meds, intubation, and airway setup. What a team player he is, proving to be a critical thinker, meanwhile proficient with his thought process and never losing focus on the goal, which is safe patient care. Thank you again! Nursing is a team effort and I am honored to be on Tyler's team. Thank you for all you bring to nursing and to the ED. I am so proud of you, your love and caring for patients, families, and colleagues. You have taught me so much over the past 2.5 years and gave me a wonderful opportunity proving that expert nurses can learn from novice nurses.
