We have had many hospital stays with my parents over the last three years. Two nurses who cared for my father in his final stay were amazing, simply breathtaking. Tyra Price was one of these two. She is in a class by herself, although astonishingly, she is one of two we encountered.

Tyra cared for my father during his last day, and the respect she showed him was remarkable. At that point, he was unable to speak much, in addition to having such low vision and difficulty hearing. She kept talking to him, though, always asking questions even if she got no response. She often asked him questions about his past, and sometimes he did respond by squeezing her hand. She usually finished her visit by checking on us, and she would squat or kneel to speak to us when we were sitting down. Since we thought he would be going home to hospice, Tyra was constantly teaching and explaining things to us as she cared for him.

When his condition suddenly deteriorated, she helped us prepare for his death in so many quiet and thoughtful ways. We noticed she wore shoe covers, and we assume it was so her shoes would not squeak. We liked how she opened the window, and that she never once seemed rushed or hurried. She answered all our questions after his death with the same kindness that surrounded everything she did, and we will never forget how she supported us!
