A patient showed up to the Urgent Care minutes before closing with significant health concerns. The UCC team escalated their concerns regarding EBOLA screening and they stayed 6 hours past their shift with the extremely sick patient to ensure the patient received the care he needed. During this time frame, the team coordinated phone calls, pages, completed charting, and delegation of tasks, all while ensuring the patient received the most compassionate and excellent care until they received clearance from the proper teams and were safely able to transfer the patient.
Trisha Adams was the charge nurse and the contact point person between front line staff and leadership for the UCC. She worked tirelessly with Vivian Ruffu and Irma Barceló to ensure the patient received the most optimal care. She coordinated the phone calls, delegated tasks, escalated her concerns, and kept everyone involved calm. She ensured everyone was staying abreast on the status and the plan of care. She did a fantastic job, was extremely professional, and kept her cool in an extremely stressful environment.
Ariel Baker was the nurse who escalated her concerns for the patient immediately. She took direction very well and was there to assist Ashley by running for needed supplies. She remained calm throughout the entire night and never once complained or thought twice about her role.
Ashley Milby was the assistant manager on at the time. Ashley jumped right in, put on her protective equipment, and stayed with the patient until the very end. She delegated tasks and cared for the extremely ill patient with the greatest compassion, regardless of the risks involved. Ashley is highly respected by the staff and under her guidance, everyone collaborated effectively to provide the optimal outcome. Ashley is a truly exceptional, knowledgeable leader who leads by example. She has relentless love and compassion for the nursing profession and displays this when caring for patients.
Joy Palmer, Monica Farmakidis, and Ehimwenma Enodunmwenben (Kelly) were three of the staff nurses who took direction from the charge RN Trisha extremely well. They were able to keep their patients away from the confidential area, gave great care, and discharged their patients in a timely, calm, and professional manner. They also assisted with transfers and discharges of other patients when needed.
Karina Chavez was our rock star tech during a busy and chaotic situation. She continued to care for the patients and assist all nurses without skipping a beat. She did not leave for the night until she knew all patients and RNs were taken care of.
Vivian Ruffu was a force to be reckoned with and exactly the level of management experience that was needed on the front line. She worked tirelessly to coordinate everything we needed between IP, leadership, disaster management, and ensuring the frontline line staff had everything that was needed.
Irma Barcelo was the calming presence who everyone needed in the high-stress environment. She could tell that Ashley could use an extra set of hands and quietly put on her protective equipment and was suddenly at the bedside caring for the patient with Ashley. Her timing was perfect and greatly appreciated by the staff.
Judson Bryant was a runner between Main ED and UCC to bring any supplies and equipment needed to care for the patient. He was always calm, professional, and easy to work with.
