Mom could not talk, so Valentina spoke constantly to her, telling her what she was doing and always using soft, sweet, kind words to soothe her.
My 95-year-old mother had a severe stroke and multi-organ failure. In addition, after a procedure, she lost blood flow to her foot. Valentina patiently and methodically searched with the Doppler until she could find a pulse, and this gave us hope that Mom would not need an amputation of her foot. Valentina never said no to any of the requests I made regarding her care, and there were many. She explained everything that was going on and the plan for the day. She suctioned her frequently to prevent aspiration pneumonia. She gently bathed her and would go to great lengths to turn her every two hours, as her small 90-pound body was so weak and fragile. She gave attention to every detail to position pillows to support her arms and legs so she would not be uncomfortable. Mom could not talk, so Valentina spoke constantly to her, telling her what she was doing and always using soft, sweet, kind words to soothe her. She allowed us to put on mom's daily pink lipstick, which she wore every day, and her perfume, which she loved. Valentina worked closely with us to provide the extra protein Mom needed to maintain her muscle strength. Valentina worked closely with the six different teams of doctors to make sure everyone was aware of the plans of care. She also offered numerous times to give the caretaker a break to grab a meal, and her attention to detail gave us the reassurance that Mom would be OK for the time we would be gone. She went the extra mile to exercise mom's arms and legs on a regular basis to prevent frozen joints and keep her muscles from getting tone. She also had a second patient who was quite challenging, but she always had time to care for Mom, too, without ever being rushed. Mom has had 11 admissions over the last 7 years, and we have never had a nurse who went this far above and beyond the call of duty. She is an Extraordinary Nurse and an extraordinary individual who has overcome the challenges of growing up in a war and finding a way to make it to the USA and train as a nurse. We have been blessed to have her care for Mom at the most important part of her life. She is most deserving of this award. Thank you.
