My 88-year-old grandmother fell and broke her hip a few days ago. This has, of course, been so scary for our family, but calling to ask how she's doing and hearing "We have a great nurse named 'Val" gave me so much peace. Today, the day of surgery, I got to meet the infamous Val, and I immediately understood why everybody was such a fan of hers. As my grandmother was waking up, she was confused and scared, but some of the first words we heard were "Where is Val?" "I really like Val, she's been so sweet to me." And of course, Val responds to say, "I'm right here, honey, don't you worry." My entire family feels at ease knowing she's being cared for by someone who is gentle and kind yet matter-of-fact and confident. She is a one-of-a-kind nurse, and we are so glad she's the one taking care of our Nanna.
