I would like to recognize Valerie. She was my friend's nurse. My friend was admitted to the hospital and was going to have emergency surgery. My friend was terrified. Not only was this her first surgery, but she is 20 weeks pregnant with her first child, so her fears and worries of "What if" was over the top. She was very upset crying and scared, and the second I see any tears, it's over, and I'm crying. Everything was moving really fast and they were wanting to take my friend into surgery just hours after arriving in her room.
Valerie came in and immediately started comforting her and reassuring her that pregnant women do have successful surgeries all the time. She just barely met my friend and was already telling her about the love she had for her and her baby. I felt the love and compassion Valerie had for her job and her patients. She made the patient feel so much more comfortable and at ease. Valerie even noticed me getting teary-eyed over my friend's distress and came over and hugged me.
I pray that if I or my loved ones find ourselves in the unfortunate situation in the hospital I hope all the nurses treat me the same way. This has given me a new perspective of how treating patients with that amount of compassion can do for the patient and their loved ones.
