Valerie was notified by the Same Day Surgery staff of a concern regarding a patient scheduled for an outpatient surgical procedure. Valerie spoke to this patient and identified that there were signs of human trafficking by the support person who had accompanied the patient. Valerie made sure the correct contacts were made, house supervisor, security, etc. Valerie then worked with an advocate with Crime Victim Services to ensure all necessary measures to protect this patient were taken. Valerie provided this patient with a compassionate ear and a safe environment to share her fears and trauma. Valerie also ensured the support persons remained outside of the room so Crime Victim Services could speak to the patient. It was determined that this patient had indeed been trafficked.

I am nominating Valerie for the DAISY Award, as this is but one example of her dedication to our patients and our community. Valerie lives each day with integrity and a desire to serve all with compassion while assuring their dignity is respected. I have also witnessed Valerie give freely of her time to support events for our staff. Valerie is truly a gem, and I am fortunate to call her my friend and colleague. Thank you, Val!
