Your selflessness and compassion exemplify the true essence of nursing, and we are forever grateful for the profound impact you had on us during such a difficult time.
My mother spent just over three weeks on the 7th floor while doctors and nurses uncovered her eventual diagnosis of small-cell lung cancer. Her condition took a turn for the worse, and she was admitted to the ICU. She eventually passed away. I want to take a moment to recognize some of her care team members who went above and beyond during her time at St. Anthony. Valerie P. was the daytime nurse for my mom for two days, and her first nurse when she arrived in the ICU. I cannot say enough good things about this woman. I wrote her a short note that I hope she can read. Valerie, as I sit down to express my gratitude, I find myself at a loss for words to adequately convey the immense appreciation I have for the way you cared for my mom while simultaneously caring for us, too. From the minute she arrived in the ICU, you treated her with dignity. You gave her a “spa day”. Making sure she had a bath and put her hair up in a ballerina bun. You were cheerful and kind, while calming our anxieties. As the night grew on and you noticed we might have a nice sunset, you turned my mom’s bed around so that she could watch it with me. It had been 18 days since she had been outside and just as long since she was able to look out a window. When the sunset peaked, I will never forget my mom exclaiming, “Look, it's pink!” Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us that special moment. As you know, she was intubated that night, and that was one of the last things she spoke to me. The next day, I watched as you worked tirelessly for her while training a student. Thank you for always speaking directly to her when you entered the room or when you were performing tests while she was intubated. Nursing, especially lately, is an extremely difficult job and I wish I could offer you more than a mere note to show my appreciation! Your selflessness and compassion exemplify the true essence of nursing, and we are forever grateful for the profound impact you had on us during such a difficult time. Please know that your dedication and kindness will always hold a special place in our hearts.
