As an expert nurse, Valerie has exemplified the kind of nurse whom patients and families, as well as the organization, recognize as an outstanding role model. Valerie exhibits the following highly valued qualities and attributes which directly reflect our nursing philosophy and mission statement. She takes it upon herself to go above and beyond to care for patients and their families, at their most vulnerable moments. She educates and informs her patients in the community regarding diseases and illness prevention. An instance I can remember is when she called me concerned about a patient's son, who was feeling overwhelmed. She said, "We have to help this patient and her son, he does not want to put her in a nursing home". She advocated by collaborating with the interdisciplinary team and coordinating services for respite care, in order to support, maintain, and preserve, the primary caregiving relationship and bond. He was overwhelmed and stressed due to caring for 2 family members who required around the clock care. She immediately sought guidance and collaborated with the interdisciplinary team. As a seasoned nurse, she is always readily available to share her knowledge, wisdom, and skills with novice nurses as well as her patients. She is ever ready to infuse a coordinated team effort with her enthusiasm and insights, and always prepared to render care to our patients, regardless of diagnosis and acuity level. She is fearless, and her presence is a testament to the power of self-determination and commitment to quality care. Her contributions have been and continue to be invaluable.
