Vanessa had a unique ability to see and respond if she felt N was unhappy or uncomfortable.
My perfect baby boy spent the last 16 days of his little life in the PICU at QMC. He fell asleep for the last time in Mummy’s arms at only 59 days old. Since then, time has stood still for me, and there are no words I can find to describe the pain for me and my husband. N was perfect in every possible way, too precious for this life.

Vanessa was our first night nurse in the PICU, and from there, she regularly cared for N. I will be eternally grateful for all the love and excellent care she provided to my little boy and the continuous support she offered to us. Professionally, Vanessa was always open and honest with us. During such a difficult time, this was crucial. She consistently sought to include us in all of N’s care, listening to us to help her get to know him as well as she could. This, I believe, is invaluable to the care he received.

Vanessa had a unique ability to see and respond if she felt N was unhappy or uncomfortable. I felt at ease knowing my boy was in her hands. On N’s final night, Vanessa was at work but in a different role. Despite that, she made time to come and see us and our boy. She took it upon herself to be the one who supported us to the mortuary, where we’d lay our baby to rest. As we weren’t able to go into the mortuary, Vanessa stepped up and took him in, tucking him in for me. I will never be able to thank her enough for everything she did for my baby, especially in those final moments when it was time for us to say goodbye. She went above and beyond for us, and having her support and care for N made a world of difference for us.

Thank you so much from the bottom of my broken heart. The ward and any future patient are lucky to have you as their nurse.

Note: This is Vanessa's 2nd DAISY Award!
