Vanessa, worried about her well-being during the pandemic, made arrangements for a safe ride home.
Vanessa cared for a patient who had a very grave prognosis. The patient did not have COVID however due to the pandemic, the patient's wife was the only approved visitor. She did not have anyone to lean on. She did not have a support system. The patient's wife was frail and elderly and scared to make a decision alone. Vanessa provided comfort to her and asked her to share some things about her husband that the medical staff might not know, and calmly supported her as she decided to proceed with end-of-life care for her husband. The patient's wife shared with her that lights and classical music brought him happiness, joy, and was very calming for him. Vanessa quickly initiated the 3 wishes program and obtained beautiful white lights to display above the bed in his room. It created a calming environment. Vanessa played classical music and diffused lavender oil.
After, the wife was all alone and had no way of getting home, except for public transportation. Vanessa, worried about her well-being during the pandemic, made arrangements for a safe ride home. The wife called the unit a week later and described her care as, "kind, considerate, generous, and above and beyond." She stated that she would have never been able to make the decision to honor her husband's wishes of a peaceful death without her support. She said that meeting the kind-spirited Vanessa was the one good thing that came from her loss and wanted her to be recognized and honored for the amazing person she is.
