I want to recognize Vanessa Silva, RN, PICU. Recognizing that her teenage PICU patient was a big NY Giants fan and knowing he was depressed to learn he'd be sidelined for some or all of his sophomore football season, Vanessa called me determined to find a NY Giants player to pay him a visit. When she contacted me, her enthusiasm was infectious. Thanks to her insight and idea (and a little help from Corporate), we were able to secure a surprise visit before the young man was discharged. It was wonderful to hear how Vanessa's extra effort was so well received by the patient and family. I am grateful to know we have a nurse like Vanessa caring for our pediatric patients and their families; what she does has an impact on those she cares for.
