I am one of the internal medicine residents. I recently met Vanita Thompson and while I'm sure there are many great stories about her, I recently worked with her in the MICU. She took care of one of my patients overnight who had been put placed on hospice and was awaiting transfer to home. He had been eating minimally during his stay.
He told me the morning after Vanita took care of him that she stayed in his room for over an hour, talking with him and slowly getting him to eat an entire meal. He mentioned to me that it meant a lot to him that someone took the time out of their schedule to keep him company, allow him to tell his stories, and to help him eat.
Vanita was also incredibly kind to me after I had had a long day at work, making sure that I had food and water. She checked in on me the following day to make sure that I was feeling ok and has since seen me in the hallway and stopped to make sure that all is well.
Vanita clearly embodies what it means to be an excellent nurse, taking the time to not only care for her patients, but also those around her (employees, staff, and otherwise). She has a great attitude, is always smiling, and makes the work environment a better place.
