During her busy day, juggling multiple patients, Vera made my mom feel as if she were her only patient.
My mom was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 9.5 years ago. After 9 years of being cancer free we found out that her cancer had returned. With nephrostomy tube replacement, chemotherapy every 2 weeks, and a hip fracture, we spent a lot of time at the hospital and met many compassionate nurses that made our road easier. When mom was admitted for severe bleeding into CWN8, we met Vera who in a short stay exceeded any expectation we ever had for nursing care. During her busy day, juggling multiple patients, Vera made my mom feel as if she were her only patient. She showed me new techniques for nephrostomy care, invited a nurse to check mom’s colostomy, and gave us helpful tips on obtaining supplies we needed and having them covered by insurance. She took exceptional care of my mom’s port, talked about techniques for bed sore prevention, and recognized the problem, she found custom solutions for mom’s leg with severe lymphedema to ensure a perfect fit of compression boots. She supported me and inspired me to be a better caregiver to my mom at home. I am writing this feedback as we are being transferred to a different floor. Our stay in Vera’s care was less than the duration of her shift but her knowledge, kindness, and compassion as well as precise execution compelled me to nominate Vera for the DAISY Award. Thank you, Vera and all the caregivers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
