As no patient family member was present, Verna even willingly extended her duty to stay with her patient in the emergency room to ensure that she was safe.
I received an endorsement from a fellow shift-in-charge (SIC) that we had a patient relative who had tested positive for Covid-19. As per protocol, we did the swabbing for the patient and her family. The nurse-on-duty, Verna, informed me that the swab result of the patient was positive. I then instructed her to inform the family so that they could arrange transportation for the patient to take her to a facility for Covid positive cases.
When the ambulance arrived, NOD Verna accompanied her patient from the house to the hospital without any hesitation or fear of possibly catching the virus herself. As no patient family member was present, she even willingly extended her duty to stay with her patient in the emergency room to ensure that she was safe. She only left the hospital when the patient was transferred to the ward and she was certain the patient was safe and stable.
From the time NOD Verna knew about her patient testing positive to accompanying her to the hospital to staying with her in the ER to getting her transferred in the ward, she just kept me updated. I did not hear her complain nor mention getting exposed to the virus. All throughout that evening, I saw a nurse who showed so much compassion for her patient, a nurse who was willing to go over and beyond to ensure that her patient was receiving the best care possible, a nurse who was teeming with dedication for her profession.
Verna is a true DAISY Nurse as she embodies the very characteristic that an awardee should be - Extraordinary.
