She cared not only for his physical needs but also protected his dignity, comfort, and emotional well-being.
When my husband was admitted to the critical care unit, my world was turned upside down. I had never seen him so sick, and the fear of losing him was paralyzing. I felt helpless, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to navigate the days ahead.
On the third day of his stay, I met Veronica, and everything changed.
Veronica was a light in one of the darkest moments of my life. From the very beginning, she approached both me and my husband with warmth, empathy, and a calm confidence that immediately eased my fears. She introduced herself with a genuine smile and took the time to learn who we were, not just as a patient and a worried spouse, but as people. That human connection made all the difference.
One of the things that stood out most about Veronica was that she never made me feel like a burden, even when I had what felt like endless questions. She answered everything she could with honesty and compassion, and even when she didn’t have an immediate answer, she made sure I felt seen, heard, and supported. Her care came from a place of genuine sincerity; you could feel it.
Over the three days, we were fortunate enough to have Veronica; her commitment and compassion never wavered. What moved me most was the way she advocated for my husband. Veronica wasn’t simply executing tasks or following protocol; she was thinking ahead. She asked important questions of the doctors and care team, ensuring that every step of his care was thoughtful, deliberate, and tailored to ease what could have been a very difficult transition.
When it came time to wean my husband off sedation, Veronica went above and beyond. She positioned herself right outside his room so she could be close by if he became confused or distressed. She didn’t have to stay there, but she chose to. That simple, powerful act spoke volumes about the kind of nurse she is. She cared not only for his physical needs but also protected his dignity, comfort, and emotional well-being.
Veronica exemplifies what nursing is truly about: compassion, critical thinking, advocacy, and unwavering humanity. The Hospital of Central Connecticut is fortunate to have her as part of its critical care team.
She made an indelible impact on our lives, and I will forever be grateful for the kindness, strength, and extraordinary skill she brought to us during such a fragile time. I don’t know if our paths will cross again, though I hope they do under happier circumstances. Veronica will always hold a special place in my heart.
