I have had 2 patients' families in the recent weeks seek me out to discuss the care Vesta provides to her patients. Both families stated Vesta is very engaged with both the patient and the family regarding their needs. One of the patients is a past transplant recipient with a failed kidney who is on dialysis and not doing well. There was an order for a Groshong catheter and a hospice consult. The previous day the family did not want to have either done as they did not understand the full concept. Both the daughter and the mother came to my office on a Monday to tell me they had Vesta as their loved one's nurse and she spent a lot of time speaking with them about the patient and the care he needed. She was very engaged in how their lives are at home and how this affects both the patient and the caregiver. The family voiced concerns about how little he is eating and told her what he really likes to eat in the morning and how important his coffee is to him. She made sure he got plenty of coffee and cream of wheat and fed him as he is unable to feed himself. Not only did she take care of him that day she made sure the nurses knew in report and the charge nurses knew what he preferred for nutrition to ensure he was taken care of every day not just the days she is at work. Discussions were held between Vesta and the family regarding palliative care and hospice and what this entails as he needs long-term antibiotics for his current condition. The family voiced how happy they were that she made a connection with them and with their husband/father to create the best possible care for him in the current situation. This is not just one scenario of how Vesta goes above and beyond, she is very compassionate in her care of the patients, always makes a personal connection, and receives much recognition for her ongoing care.
