On Friday Vicky attended to a patient who she had cared for the previous day, who was now returning for imaging studies. His imaging revealed a new diagnosis of cancer. Because she had established a strong relationship with him the day prior, Vicky made sure, with this new diagnosis, that he knew she was 100% there for him; invested in helping him get the prompt follow up care he needed. She also made herself available to him for any and all questions.
Later in the day, after the patient had gone home, he called back to talk to her further, and asked that she help explain things to his spouse. Vicky was amazing during this conversation! At no time did she sugar coat the scenario but she communicated in a way to give the patient and his spouse hope. She thoroughly explained the process and what to expect in words they could understand and accept; even though they were very hard of hearing.
Vicky has a true gift. She says what needs to be said at any given time, even when it may not be what one wants to hear, to help people understand and process often difficult and complex information. She uses analogies very effectively to explain things to patients. She explains complex things in a way her patients can understand... all the time.
