At approximately 9:20 pm, Wellstar Douglas Hosptial received a communication from Grady EMS that they were inbound with a female patient complaining of chest pain. This was a Postal Service worker exposed to an unknown powder substance from a box at the post office. Without hesitation, Mrs. Vicki Lyons sprang into action. She informed her ED team what they had and started to delegate on setting up a de-con shower. Vicki started to get prepped by putting on personal protective equipment. As soon as the patient arrived with Grady EMS, Vicki proceeded with the decontamination process for possible hazardous material exposure. During the process, some things worked, and some did not. Nonetheless, Vicki made it work and with her perseverance, she got the job done. She was like a conductor in a symphonic orchestra leading her E.D. clinical staff team.
