I have never seen my son so relaxed during a trip to the hospital. Vicki showed him dignity, compassion, and grace.
I am writing on behalf of my son. He is a disabled adult who requires total care. He suffers from myoclonus and in March he had an episode that was so prolonged he needed to be brought to Overlook. To say I was terrified of the treatment my son was going to receive especially during covid visiting restrictions was an understatement. Being disabled, my son has always been interpreted as being defiant and uncooperative, when in reality he is terrified! Being disabled, most people don’t take the time to talk to him, let alone explain what they are doing. I started calling to check on him almost immediately. I spoke to his nurse several times asking to speak to the charge nurse knowing his nurse was very busy. I knew I had to explain what he needed. She assured me he would be well taken care of. When I was finally allowed to go to the floor, I found my son sleeping. When he woke up he gave me a sleepy smile, not the terrified look that I was expecting. His nurse for the day was Vicki who came in with his PCT a few minutes after I arrived, my son gave them both a smile. The relief that came over me was profound. Throughout the shift, they were both in and out many times. Each time greeting my son and letting him know what was happening. They took the time to comfort him throughout everything being done. I have never seen my son so relaxed during a trip to the hospital. They showed him dignity, compassion, and grace. I would like to thank everyone that took part in his care, I know there were many. You all made a difficult situation very comforting. During my visit, I only had the pleasure of meeting and really experiencing Vicki and her PCT, and their true commitment to their profession. I am very grateful to you all for the care and treatment you showed my son and your patience with my multiple phone calls.
