Her passion for nursing practice is contagious and has made all of us better nurses.
22 years ago, the DAISY Foundation Award was created to recognize “Extraordinary Nurses,” who provide extraordinary, compassionate care. The award celebrates the work of the nurse year-round. Their mission is to express gratitude to nurses in programs or organizations for the extraordinary compassion and skillful care they provide to patients and families. By honoring compassionate nurses, DAISY reinforces the importance of compassion in healthcare. The DAISY Foundation has honored more than 177,000 nurses.
UT Southwestern Medical Center has partnered with the DAISY Foundation for the past 10 years, right after Dr. Victoria England, DNP, MBA, NE-BC, Associate Chief Nursing Officer, joined the team in 2011. The timing of the partnership is no coincidence, as England has been on a mission to improve, celebrate, and build up the nursing profession at UT Southwestern.
Dr. England met the following criteria at UT Southwestern for the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award:
• Distinguished career as a nurse in clinical practice, administration, education, and/or research that promotes a positive image of professional nursing
• Demonstrates and actively engages in the professional development of self and others in the nursing profession
• Serves as a role model and advocate for nursing practice and the advancement of nursing as a professional
• Advocates for the improvement of patient care and serves as an exemplar for enhancing the patient experience
• Recognized by the broader nursing community as a transformational nursing leader
Her colleagues worked together to complete her nomination for the DAISY Lifetime recognition. Many of them simply shared their experiences working with her on various goals throughout the years.
“Dr. England is a fierce advocate for nursing as a profession and for nurses everywhere. She’s passionate about the work, the teams, and the patients, and she brings others along. Her energy, enthusiasm, and creativity are second to none and are sure to be missed as she moves into retirement!"
Several of the leaders who contributed to her nomination shared what it was like to watch her work as she achieved numerous professional milestones on behalf of the organization. “Dr. England is an amazing nurse and leader. The impact she has had on patients, colleagues, and the community throughout her career is astounding. The Texas and DFW nursing community has advanced significantly, due in no small part to Dr. England’s passion, tenacity, and vision. The personal connections and network that Dr. England has fostered have strengthened nursing in Texas. Her impact at UTSW is reflected in national recognition, including a US News & World Report ranking and two Magnet designations. Her passion for nursing practice is contagious and has made all of us better nurses. Dr. England - Thank you for everything you have done and for who you are as a nurse and a colleague!”
“Victoria is hands down the best nurse leader partner I have ever worked with (and I have worked with some great ones!). She truly wants what is best for individual nurses, the nursing profession in Dallas, Texas, and around the world. Whether she is planning a celebration, writing a Magnet document, or sharing the experiences of American nurses with nurses in China, she does so with equal passion and enthusiasm for our profession. When I think about Victoria’s career, I will think about how important it is to understand what professional practice looks like, no matter our role. I will also think about her giving spirit, whether it’s a book, a kind note, a funny/thoughtful trinket, or the gift of time. She is a true nurse professional through and through and deserving of this award.”
The DAISY Foundation sent the following message to Dr. England on her retirement from UT Southwestern: “Victoria has been an absolute pleasure to work with. She has done so much to bring meaningful recognition to nurses at your facility. I appreciate all of her hard work and working with The DAISY Foundation over the years. We wish her all the best with her retirement.”
In addition to the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award Certificate, Dr. England will also receive a DAISY Lapel Pin, specially designed by artist Ann Hand, and a Unique Healer's Touch sculpture on a pedestal with a personalized plaque.
