She listened to me, respected my wishes, and helped me achieve them. She was friendly, warm, and caring throughout my whole stay. I can’t thank Vicky enough for taking care of me.
I was on Department 1 under Vicky’s care for 2 days. I was having a laparoscopy procedure to remove endometriosis involving the bowel. I was really nervous on the day of admission. I was admitted at 7am and I didn’t go down to surgery until 1pm, so it was a long time to wait being so nervous. Vicky really helped to put me at ease. Due to her manner and care, I trusted her immediately and really warmed to her. She is friendly, knowledgeable, good at her job, caring, warm and goes over and above.
Vicky spent more time with me, more than she needed to, to make me feel at ease. She also communicated with my partner who was with me, spending time to get to know his needs and to put him at ease. Vicky knew I was nervous about waking up alone in recovery and told me to speak to the anesthetist to ask for support. She also took my partner’s number and committed to calling him as soon as I was out of surgery so I could see him. She explained everything really well. She was very gentle and discreet when doing my enema and explained what would happen so I didn’t feel worried.
When I returned from surgery, Vicky was there to meet me back on the ward. She handled a difficult conversation and situation with the recovery nurses, who I didn’t feel were listening to me, and she advocated on my behalf. She made me feel confident that she was in charge and was getting the best care for me. She did ring my partner as she had promised and he was waiting for me also, which was a big thing for me. Vicky came to tell me she was going home and she would see me in the morning. She explained what would happen in the night and who would be looking after me.
The next day, Vicky cared for me all day. I was eager to get home, and Vicky explained carefully and knowledgeably what would need to happen for me to be allowed to go home. She worked with me all day bringing me water, checking on my progress, and encouraging me along. She supported me in going to the toilet and in walking around the ward. She explained very clearly each step and cheered me on when I achieved each one. She made me feel confident and well cared for. I felt that she treated me well, explaining things instead of hiding things from me or not respecting me enough to spend time talking to me. She showed me much respect and care. She cared for my partner as well, offering him food and drink and care.
Vicky was my advocate, my cheerleader, and my carer all in one, and she was the main reason I recovered so well and was able to return home. She listened to me, respected my wishes, and helped me achieve them. She was friendly, warm, and caring throughout my whole stay. I can’t thank Vicky enough for taking care of me. I felt like I was her only patient (when in fact, she had five others she cared for at the same time as me). I think she is a great nurse, going over and above for her patients - and I believe she deserves recognition for this.
