For the last 11 years, I have taken great pride in being a Torrance Memorial volunteer. Now, I am writing to express my gratitude from a different perspective: as a family member of a patient. My sister, who is only 66 years old, had several strokes a couple of months earlier and has now been brought into the ER with new symptoms. She has different medical needs, and with all the tubes, tests and trying to insert the IV into her difficult veins, it is in our ER that, as a family member, I experienced first-hand the wonderful support of the Torrance Memorial care team right from the start. We have such a great RN staff on all of our units, but during M's stay on 5 West one RN, in particular, stood out to me. Victoria (Tori) cared for M during three of her days in the PCU. Wow, wow, wow! M was a very difficult patient, yet the patience shown to her by Tori was simply unbelievable. Tori made a point to talk calmly with M even when what she was saying made no sense at all. Tori always had the time to fill me in honestly about what was going on and took the time to answer all of my questions and sometimes, just listened to me and to M. I never felt that any question or request I had was judged as trivial or unimportant. At times when I felt impatient with my sister and embarrassed by her outbursts and rudeness, Tori reassured me that this was "okay" and that it was something they could deal with. How did Tori remain so calm and professional when M was verbally and physically lashing out? I was so impressed; I am so very appreciative of her and want to recognize her for her outstanding level of care and compassion. I will be forever grateful. I am not sure about what is next for M, but I do know that especially Nurse Tori, made this difficult situation much easier for M and for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
