My mother informed me via a phone call today that she was being discharged from the hospital and going to a skilled nursing facility in a few short hours. The release was happening far sooner than I expected (and been led to believe by other caregivers) so I left work and came to the hospital immediately. Upon my arrival, I learned my mother's nurse was caring for another patient, so Vicky addressed my questions/concerns in an informative/comforting tone and manner. At one point, I asked her to stop for a moment because I was becoming overwhelmed and was about to lose my composure. Vicky simply rubbed my arm and waited for me to gather my wits.
Her level of empathy (I learned her father is in a nursing home too) was greatly appreciated. Not only did Vicky answer my questions when I arrived, but she also helped coordinate my mother's discharge with the nurse and patient care facilitator. As I was leaving the hospital to return to work, Vicky gave me a hug. That hug meant more than she could possibly imagine. And I am thankful she was able to help my mother and me today.
My mom loves blueberries. Vicky brought my mom fresh blueberries (something she actually can have on her restricted diet) two days in a row. :) I thought it a very kind gesture. Also, my mom was not released yesterday as everyone thought. More tests had to be performed so she is still there. I was visiting my mother today and asked for Vicky, again, because my mom's nurse was busy. Vicky came down to talk to me and answer my questions - again - even though she was only in the building for a meeting. So nice!
