Though his time with this patient was brief, his impact will resonate with the family for the rest of their lives.
As house supervisor, I have had the privilege of witnessing Vincent's remarkable growth as a nurse over the past year. It's difficult to define what distinguishes nursing as a calling rather than just a career, but if I were to describe this distinction, he would be my prime example. His demeanor in challenging situations is not only professional and respectful but also overflowing with kindness. He possesses a genuine heart, and both his patients and colleagues consistently acknowledge this.
Emergency nursing presents unique challenges: while it may appear to be 'just' four rooms, those rooms can accommodate everyone from the most critically ill elderly patient to our community's most fragile infants. It requires unwavering commitment and adaptability to excel in this role.
Last week, we faced a particularly tough situation. While Vincent was taking a report on a critical patient, the patient suddenly began to code. Vincent did not hesitate or defer to the outgoing nurse; he jumped in and became the recorder/team leader for the code. Unfortunately, the patient did not survive. However, his dedication continued as he ensured he had coverage for his other patients, allowing him to prepare the body with utmost care and compassion for the grieving family.
Though his time with this patient was brief, his impact will resonate with the family for the rest of their lives. He was the kind presence that remained until the very end. I am nominating him because he is truly deserving of recognition, but I also want him to understand just how special his heart is.
As Maya Angelou said, "People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." I hope that Vincent continues to perform those small acts of kindness, as they create a lasting impact throughout our system, our community, and the hearts of our patients and their families.
