Vincent Mace, lovingly known as Vince, had a patient that he had taken care of the night before. Unfortunately, on his return the next day for his shift, the patient was still in the room where he had left him. The patient was waiting for a bed at our sister campus. Vince visited the patient, and he relayed to him that he had had a rough night. He was cooped up in the room, the noise from the nursing station was loud, and the monitor in the room kept running every 15 minutes after Vince had previously changed it to run less frequently. The patient had two requests. He wanted some fresh air. It had been 21.5 hours since he had gone outside. Vince granted his request. He grabbed a wheelchair and went outside with the patient. The transport team came for the patient and Vince returned with him inside. Vince borrowed a phone to help the patient contact his wife, which was his second request. Vince assisted him in calling his wife so the patient could tell her that he was finally being transported. Vince looked at the patient with such compassion on his face, it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Vince reported to the transport team what he had known of the patient from the shift before and pointed them in the direction of questions to ask the new primary nurse. Vince also spoke up for the patient who was experiencing visible and clinical signs of discomfort. He ensured that the patient was medicated prior to departure. Ensured that the transport team had everything they needed to take care of the patient en route, and he assisted with getting IV access on the patient as both IVs the patient currently had gone bad. The patient was so happy with Vince that he wished that he could have him be the one to put in an IV every time he needed one. As the patient was departing, he said he was uncomfortable on the stretcher, and Vince quickly went to his side to adjust the stretcher to the patient's satisfaction. As the patient said his farewells and departed, Vince looked outward toward him like a family member who was seeing someone they loved off on their travels. Such amazing care and love for this patient is what nursing is all about. Love such as Christ told us to love our neighbor as ourselves. It was an unforgettable moment that touched my heart and reminded me this is why we do what we do.
