Earlier this year my husband had a colonoscopy. The day prior he was having a VERY difficult time of getting the liquid down, so much that he continually said he will NEVER do this again. The morning of his colonoscopy we were talking with his nurse and she asked me when I had my colonoscopy. I had already made up my mind after listening to my husband that I was never going to do this. I responded to her question with a shrug and said, "I haven't." She said, "well you should, what's worse walking around with a colostomy bag or dying?…the hard part is already done."
Fast forward to October, during my annual exam my doctor recommended a routine colonoscopy screening as I was over 50. I seriously thought about not doing it because I thought I was healthy, no history in my family, why did I need it, and oh, drinking the liquid was going to be terrible! But I could hear that nurse (Virginia) and the words she said that day and I will forever be grateful. I did have a colonoscopy and they removed a polyp which turned out to have cancer - stage 1. I recently underwent a colon resection surgery with Dr. D. The biopsy from the resection showed no signs of cancer.
