Virginia really encouraged me and reminded me why I love nursing. She reminded me why I love teaching new nurses. When she was supposed to be there to learn from me, I think I learned more from her.
I had the honor of serving as a preceptor for Virginia Lomax during the fall semester. I also recently accepted a position with UMMC School of Nursing and have gotten the chance to see her in the classroom as well. I have been a nurse for 9 years. During that time, I have precepted multiple students and new graduates. Virginia stands out among them because of her compassion and work ethic. In my opinion, she just has that "it factor." I worked with her for 48 hours in the emergency room at North Mississippi Medical Center. Her first day with me was also my very first day back at work after being off for 12 weeks. Needless to say, I did not feel at the top of my game that day. I was so nervous about coming back to work and immediately having a student with a first-semester student at that. She was such a pleasant surprise, though. Virginia showed up ready to learn and ready to work. I never had to ask her to do anything twice, and after she got more comfortable, I rarely had to ask her to do things once. She would jump in any situation and offer assistance. She always had a smile on her face, which kept our patients at ease. Virginia utilized therapeutic communication with everyone she encountered and left her mark at NMMC ER. Virginia carries herself with professionalism and confidence. She is never afraid to ask questions and never thinks she is "above" doing any task. As a nurse who has had my own battles with "burnout," Virginia really encouraged me and reminded me why I love nursing. She reminded me why I love teaching new nurses. When she was supposed to be there to learn from me, I think I learned more from her. I will never forget the day she came back to the ER with a thank you note. It's those small gestures that she does for others that are going to take her far in her career. It is what makes other people enjoy her company, what makes her a great team player, and what is going to make her an awesome leader one day.
