Vivian's actions this morning embodied the true spirit of nursing.
Our ED nurse, Vivian, demonstrated what true nursing is all about. She was caring for a 93-year-old female patient who, at the end of her visit, became very emotional. Through tears, the patient shared how lonely she feels since the passing of her husband and the limited contact she has with her only child. She wrestled aloud with her purpose in life, as so many of her loved ones are gone.
Vivian did not simply acknowledge the patient's words - she leaned in. What might have been a brief 56-second connection stretched into nearly 20 minutes of heartfelt presence. I witnessed Vivian embracing this patient, holding her hand, and ultimately sobbing with her as they hugged. In that sacred moment, the patient did not need clinical care; she needed emotional healing, and that is exactly what Vivian provided.
This act of compassion touched more than just the patient. Those of us who witnessed the encounter were profoundly moved. It reminded us why we chose this profession in the first place. Vivian's willingness to be vulnerable and to share in her patient's pain was not only a comfort to the patient but also an inspiration to her colleagues. She showed us that sometimes the most powerful medicine we can give is our presence, our empathy, and our humanity.
Vivian's actions this morning embodied the true spirit of nursing. She provided extraordinary care that went far beyond a medical task - she restored dignity, gave comfort, and reminded a lonely soul that she was not forgotten.
