Walter demonstrates professionalism to all and genuinely displays a positive happy mannerism.
Caring for special populations in the emergency department requires special skills and attributes such as empathy, compassion, caring, and willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ for someone in need. To top these circumstances, add the adolescent and autism to the spectrum, and the acuity and personalized needs of an individual increases.

Walter demonstrates professionalism to all and genuinely displays a positive happy mannerism; however, he has been seen going that ‘extra mile’ in care, lending the emotional touch to those that may need that support in their life during difficult times. This nurse, Walter Cahoon, displays attributes regularly as evidenced by caring for this patient who has been boarded in the ED for greater than 30 days.

In this situation, he has taken the time to establish a relationship with the individual and gained their trust and support. He has taken the time in his daily schedule to either be his caregiver during shifts or visit this patient if not assigned. Without familiar on-site support while hospitalized and due to boarding status, Walter has been recognized as allowing the adolescent out of their room under controlled situations to walk and stretch their legs to see slightly different scenery. He has assisted the adolescent who can be difficult to approach with personal care needs when others could not assist. He has willingly, without request taken the boarded patient's limited personal clothing items to be cleaned and returned.

Per his co-worker, "he does these actions through the kindness of his heart." Another quote from the co-worker is: "Walter is just great and is always doing great things for his patients." His positive rapport, and calming mannerisms, influence positive reactions in a sometimes difficult environment. Another patient recently stated that Walter’s attitude and care while hospitalized made a positive impact on his recovery. Recognizing these qualities that affect others positively, helping them heal and perform daily functioning is a shout-out to the extraordinary nurse that Walter is for all of his patients. In noting his skills and actions that are displayed regularly and not just in this patient situation.
