A patient was given a 14-day Holter monitor. Over several days, the patient’s son contacted the Non-Invasive Cardiology Dept multiple times because the monitor was falling off his mother. Due to a language barrier and the son’s initial reluctance to use an interpreter, it was difficult to fully understand the issue and determine the best course of action.
On the third day, the son agreed to use an interpreter and explained that neither he nor his mother drove and asked if someone could come to their home to assess the monitor. Wendi, who is bilingual in Spanish, immediately volunteered to accompany the manager to the home visit.
Upon arrival, Wendi was able to communicate directly with both the patient and son. After assessing the monitor, she determined it had completely detached and required replacement. Wendi promptly applied a new monitor and ensured the patient and family fully understood the next steps. Both the patient and son expressed immense gratitude for the compassion, kindness, and support they received.
Wendi’s actions exemplified outstanding service and patient care. By volunteering to go to the patient’s home and truly “meeting the patient where they were,” Wendi demonstrated the very essence of Remarkable Care. Her willingness to go above and beyond, overcome barriers, and advocate for the vulnerable patient is a powerful example of excellence in nursing.
