Mrs. Schalk goes above and beyond for veterans daily, ensuring they have the best care possible. She doesn't just care for the veterans and their concerns; she also listens to family and caregivers’ concerns. If a veteran on her panel passes, she always calls next of kin to express condolences and just be a sympathetic ear. Mrs. Schalk is always there to assist other VA staff with any needs that may arise. We are including a copy of a recent letter sent to PC by one of Mrs. Schalk's veterans.

Wendy Schalk is a compassionate, patient-centered provider and an important part of the JJP VAMC team. Here is direct feedback from three of her Veterans:
 
Veteran #1: "I've used Wendy as a provider for at least three years and love how she spends time with me each visit. She listens to my concerns and involves me in my health care decisions. When my sugar numbers increased to the point where medication was an obvious choice, she worked with me (at my request) to look at diet options instead. After some significant changes to my habits, I have achieved the desired results and avoided pharmaceuticals, which was an important goal for me. She closely monitored my progress, and I was able to bring my numbers back into check. I truly appreciate her willingness to work with her patients. She doesn't just give you a quick look and then prescribe a pill. She uses all available resources to find the best solution. I tell everyone what great care I get from my primary care team at VA."
 
Veteran #2: "Wendy has been my provider for several years now. She pays attention to me. She looks at me and listens to me. She makes me feel like I matter. Sometimes little questions come up that don't necessarily require a visit, but she helps me work with Christine and Candy to get those little things addressed. When it's a 'bigger' thing, I can always count on Wendy to take my concerns seriously, refer me to a specialist if needed, and follow up to see how I'm doing. I know VA primary care is about building relationships and getting to know patients, and Wendy, Christina, and Candy certainly do that better than any private care provider I’ve ever had. I could not be happier with the care that I receive, and I will never leave VA. It's clearly the best health care in Poplar Bluff.”
 
Veteran #3: "During my visits, it is obvious that Wendy truly cares about my health. At one point I considered moving my health care management to another clinic that was actually closer to me, but there was just no way I could leave such a dedicated, compassionate, and attentive provider. Even if I can’t get an appointment on a certain day, Wendy will make sure I am able to get the care I need by working with the rest of her team. I never have to wait for the care I need. Christina, Candie, and Wendy are a fantastic team, and I am so grateful to have them helping me manage my health care.  They are why I choose VA."
