Because of Wendy’s actions, this gentleman was given the dignity to make an informed decision with his family about end-of-life care.
I spent a little time with Wendy the other day and was touched by all that she does for her patients. There was one patient, in particular, she told me about that brought tears to my eyes. She was caring for an elderly gentleman who had come into the ED from an independent living facility for excruciating back pain. After a thorough assessment, the team determined that he had an AAA. The team also informed him that the only way to fix his problem was through surgery, but the survival rate was extremely low. However, due to advanced age and multiple co-morbidities, this gentleman’s risks were even higher. In order to support this patient, Wendy assisted this gentleman with contacting each of his children to assist in making a decision. In today’s world of COVID family members are not allowed in the ED, so Wendy took the time to sit with this gentleman and he was able to discuss his decision with his children. Because of Wendy’s actions, this gentleman was given the dignity to make an informed decision with his family about end-of-life care. He was also able to hear his daughter tell him how wonderful of a father he had been throughout her life. In today’s world, where we are busier than we ever have been in healthcare, it takes a special nurse to see the big picture, slow down, and sit with a patient and call each of their children so that they can say a proper goodbye. I don’t know Wendy all that well, but I believe she would tell you she was just doing her job. When in actuality, she was doing more than just her job she was providing extraordinary care.
