Having been in Level 4 NICU for over 6 months, we've gotten to know many of the NICU nurses. We brought our daughter to Texas Children's from San Antonio to give her the best chance at a good life. While there are many nurses who could be nominated, there is one nurse that outshines all the others - Wendy Wederski.
Wendy became our daughter's first primary nurse not long after we arrived here, and over these past several months has become incredibly important and so special to us. She's laughed with us when we shared stores of silly things our daughter does. She's helped us understand the hospital jargon and been a critical sounding board for our questions and opinions. She's cried with us when we found out that our daughter's diagnosis might be fatal. She considers our every need and takes care of our daughter in a way that we never imagined of someone who's not related to us.
Our daughter has a form of Brittle Bone Disease, a condition that is pretty uncommon, given the level of severity. It's been critically important to us that doctors and nurses take extra care to help and support her, and to minimize the potential for additional issues like fractures or broken bones.
Wendy is the standard that we used to compare every other nurse, as she has proven overand over again that she has our daughter's best interest always in the front of her mind. Wendy has learned our daughter's cues, so as to know why our daughter is upset and what's causing it. She always has a solution at hand, whether it's the best way to change a diaper, repositioning her, or when we try to figure out why our daughter woke up fighting mad for seemingly no reason. Wendy always knows what's wrong and how to fix it. She takes care of our daughter as if she was her own, and there's nothing else a set of first-time parents could ask for.
Texas Children's has many outstanding nurses, but Wendy has set herself apart with a level of personal touch that goes beyond just doing a job and beyond being a good nurse. While she's not related to us, she has become a part of our family. We have so much love and gratitude for who she is and what she's done for our family.
