Watching Wesla speak with this mother brought tears and chills to me and his nurse. After over an hour of explaining (on her level), we saw some breakthrough happening...
In December, the pediatric team had the opportunity to care for a little guy who was a lot sicker than we thought. To better serve him, the hospitalist group made the decision that Nemours could best meet his needs. Unfortunately, we were dealing with an extreme language barrier (Creole speaking) that prevented us from meeting the mother where she was in terms of the disease process (huge knowledge deficit). Utilizing the interpreter line (current treatment plan and severity of need of transfer was explained by the provider) only drove her frustration higher and higher…. She rocked back and forth, shook her foot, and repeatedly stated, “I can take care of him myself!! I’ve done it for years.” Now, granted, her son looked like he hadn’t had proper care for years and years! Considering we would have to call DCF because it was a AMA….I decided to reach out to someone to see if a face-to-face would ease mom’s frustrations and fears (She wasn’t understanding). I called Wesla as I knew she was fluent in Creole to see if she could aid….she expressed to me that she was walking out the door but would come over to see if she could help. Watching Wesla speak with this mother brought tears and chills to me and his nurse. After over an hour of explaining (on her level), we saw some breakthrough happening; however, mom would quickly go back to “I want to leave.” Throughout the conversation, Wesla identified that the patient lived with her daughter, who could possibly help, and that was the sweet spot where the magic was created!!! The daughter understood and further explained to her mom the importance of him transferring to Nemours. Mom immediately felt at ease…her body was no longer tense, and we were able to get a glimpse into her frustrations. She’d been trying to get help for him for years, but, after denial after denial, she gave up and was very jaded. We were able to successfully get him transferred safely, and I could only hope/pray he’s treated and moving forward, getting the care and follow-up needed. I wanted to highlight the exceptional work of Wesla! She didn’t have to come over after her shift and commit to helping in pediatrics….she definitely wasn’t taking no for an answer as she saw deep into where the need was!!! Please recognize her for going above and beyond!!! This mom gave us all big hugs on her way out with the Nemours team as her son was air lifted out!!!
