Wesley and Titabel arranged the beds so the husband could see his wife and they could hold hands.
I would like to recognize the two Stat RNs (Wesley Teutsch, RN and Titabel Stanley, APRN) for their compassion and their unwavering dedication. Last August, we had an elderly Covid positive patient in our unit who was on a Bipap machine. His wife was also Covid positive and a patient in the ICU. She was intubated and deteriorating. It was a tough time for everyone, as all the nurses in our unit were incredibly busy with their patients and the unit was really busy with high acuity. Almost 90% of our patients were on High Flow O2, some were on BIPAP and we had been swatting patients back to back. STAT nurses, Wesley and Titabel, responded to a SWAT in our unit and transferred a patient to MICU post SWAT. After the transfer, both of them brought back our bed and cardiac monitor. On their way out of our unit, they both overheard the charge nurse and the nurse manager talking, trying to figure out who can take our elderly patient on BIPAP machine to the MICU to be with his wife, as they were withdrawing care and transitioning to comfort care. When Wesley and Titabel heard us talking, they did not even think twice! They both volunteered to take the patient to the MICU to be with his dying wife. They transported the patient, with the help of the RT to manage the Bipap. They arranged the beds so the husband could see his wife and they could hold hands. Wesley and Titabel comforted the patient and they stayed with him until he was ready to go back to the unit. I was really touched and amazed by the compassion and unwavering dedication of these two STAT Nurses. They made the wish of our patient to be with his dying wife and to hold her hand for the last time possible. Our patient’s wife did not die alone because of the great help of these two amazing and caring STAT Nurses!
