I received a personal letter from the Transplant Coordinator, for LifeLink of Georgia. The letter began with, “On behalf of LifeLink of Georgia and our transplant teams, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for your assistance and support during the recent organ donation case at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center. Through transplantation, we are able to provide life-saving organs to those in need. The option of donation all began with the generosity and concern for others. Without the support and hard work of your physicians, nurses, and other medical staff this process of donation would not have been possible.”
Our hospital and staff were able to assist LifeLink with the surgical procedure at our facility of harvesting the kidneys and liver from one of our patients who was an organ donor. This was a 28-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital for anoxia. We have been notified by LifeLink that one of the patient’s kidneys was transplanted into a 34-year-old woman from Alabama who has one child. This other kidney was transplanted into a 30-year-old man from Georgia with one child – and now they will be able to enjoy playing basketball and fishing together. The liver was transplanted into a 56-year-old from Georgia who has one child and works in transportation. This all began with your true generosity and concern for others but is ultimately possible because of your commitment and excellent care. Due to your assistance in this case, the gift of donation saved three lives. Thank you, Nicole, Laurel, Leslie, Jessica, Evan, Madison, Savannah, and Jeffrey, for all you did in ensuring this organ donation was a success. This was a TEAM approach! The realization is that 17 people die each day because the organs they need are not donated in time. LifeLink is committed to educating and inspiring the public to save lives through organ and tissue donation. Thanks to your team efforts, individuals are given another opportunity to do what they love and experience a fulfilling life and this TEAM is a part of the lifesaving story for 3 families! The last organ procurement at West Georgia was completed over 8 years ago! LifeLink and the transplant community are so thankful for your willingness and desire to save the lives of others.
