Whitney knew how to make a patient feel special and that she truly cared.
I am submitting this nomination for Whitney Berry who was my nurse on 414 South for several shifts during my week-long stay. I have been a member of the DAISY Committee since its inception at one of the LBH sister hospitals so it was easy for me to identify who I thought I should submit a nomination for. It is important to share that all my nurses were very good but Whitney truly stood out among them. Whitney not only made a strong connection during my week-long unexpected stay but also with my husband. She has a way to put people at ease and feel special. Being a leader in Healthcare, I had never been an inpatient so it was difficult being on the other side as a patient. No matter when Whitney came into my room, she was calm, attentive and made me feel like the only patient she had, which I know was not the case. I have “fragile” skin so Whitney took extra time and care with the IV antibiotics and any time we had to remove anything from my skin. It seemed after every two IV antibiotics, I needed to have a new IV and Whitney was there every step of the way. One strength that really struck me about Whitney was her interactions as she coached the Stevenson Nursing Student each day she was working. She was amazing at building their confidence while teaching her the skills needed to be a nurse. She worked with the student to complete her tasks independently but ensured I felt comfortable each of the times. I walked the hallway as I was permitted and quickly noticed that Whitney demonstrated patience, calmness and mentoring not only when she was at my bedside but as she worked with the student at the computer. Whitney knew how to make a patient feel special and that she truly cared. When I was discharged, I committed to nominating her for this deserving award. In my mind, she was the perfect selection and truly a gem.
