If you are ever hospitalized, and unable to speak for yourself, you can only pray to have a nurse like Whitney caring for you.
When our dad was in Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, Whitney really stood out in caring for him. While all the nurses gave exceptional care, Whitney gave a family caretaker touch. She would lean in to speak to Dad, asking about his pain level and making sure he knew when she would be administering medications. While his responses were very brief due to his condition, Whitney always informed him of the treatment. She even set a timer on her watch for the next dose of pain medication to ensure she came back promptly to keep him comfortable.
It didn't take long for Whitney to recognize Dad's preferred sleeping positions and the best ways to adjust him in the bed. She also took note of the interactions and positions that seemed to agitate him, and would avoid them to keep him comfortable and as peaceful as possible. When Dad needed pillows to hold positions, she didn't just stuff the pillow behind his head. Whitney took the time to ensure that his head was in the best possible position for maximum comfort and to help his breathing. She would wait a few moments to ensure that additional adjustments were not necessary. It was as if she was tucking her own family into the bed and waiting for them to drift back to sleep.
When our family arrived at the hospital for visits, Whitney always greeted us in the hallway. At the next available opportunity, she would come by the room and provide an update on Dad's status, and always ask if there was anything she could get for us. After several days of traveling to the hospital, we mentioned our disorganization. A few minutes later, Whitney stopped back by the room to let us know that a snack tray would be arriving. She contacted the kitchen to order chips, cookies, coffee, and tea. That was such a kind thing to do for the family.
