What is caring?   When looking up the word "caring" on Google one of the definitions is €“"the work or practice of looking after those unable to care for themselves, especially sick and elderly people".
The nurse that will be awarded the DAISY-In-Training Award today exhibited this definition in her actions during the Fall clinical rotation of 2016.   Observing this student, I noticed that she always took time with the patients that she was assigned too.  One particular day, I was walking the hallways to collect the students to begin post conference and I noticed this student, brushing and braiding her patient 's hair.  Earlier in the day I had noticed that this particular patient had some wild, unruly hair. This patient had suffered a stroke and was unable to comb her hair for herself and had difficulty with her speech.   She had been in the facility for a while and no one had taken the time to brush and style it for her.  At this particular facility the patients have to leave their rooms for therapy, and as women, we know that our hair has to be "right" in order for us to feel our best.
So, here this student is at the end of a clinical day after we had finished all the "nursey" things, brushing and braiding the patient 's hair and talking with her.   I had to hold back tears because the moment was so tender and to me exhibited the caring quality that an educator cannot teach to a student.  Throughout her time with me as a clinical instructor I noticed several actions that showed she is deserving of this award, she always went the extra mile to CARE for her patients.
