Whitney held her ground and followed her nursing intuition and knowledge knowing that the patient was not safe to go home.
Whitney had a patient on Kendrick that was part of the OBGYN team. This patient had a failed hysterectomy and was only here for observation overnight. After being seen by the provider a discharge order was placed, Whitney did not agree with this order and advocated for her patient for almost 10 hours to keep the patient in the hospital. The patient was clearly showing signs that she was not safe to go home and needed to stay in the hospital.
During this time, Whitney had to deal with the provider being upset because the patient had not been discharged. Whitney held her ground and followed her nursing intuition and knowledge knowing that the patient was not safe to go home. Due to Whitney's diligence and communication with the charge RN, and house supervisor during the shift, the patient stayed. It was later discovered that this patient had a bowel injury and needed emergent surgery to fix the injury.
Due to Whitney advocating for her patient we were able to discover this and keep the patient safe. She did an amazing job taking care of this patient and making sure they received the best care possible even though the provider wanted to discharge the patient. Whitney demonstrated that she is an extremely amazing nurse who cares for her patients truly.
