Wilfredo “Jun” Mungcal prevented a catastrophic medical error. While on call, he received notice that he had to come in for a kidney transplant procedure. The Gift of Hope driver delivered a kidney. Upon reviewing the UNOS# on the renal transplant patient communication form, Nurse Jun informed the GOH driver that the UNOS# did not match and he couldn’t accept the kidney. The driver insisted that it was the correct kidney and that it was a mistake on the form, and emphasized that Jun correct his paperwork. Nurse Jun, adhering to the HRO principle of “if you see something, say something,” informed the driver that he would not accept the kidney and called the transplant coordinator. The transplant coordinator confirmed that the kidney on hand was, in fact, the wrong kidney. A few minutes after the GOH driver left, a new GOH driver arrived. Jun reviewed the UNOS# to confirm that it was the correct kidney and accepted the kidney. The transplant went on as planned. Nurse Jun saved our veteran!
