My grandmother spent many days at the Medical Center, over half of those days were spent in Neuro ICU. My sister and I spent every day there throughout the whole stay.
We met Will her first day in Neuro while he was shadowing another nurse. He truly made our last days with Granny better than we would have expected. He was empathetic yet professional, caring but not invasive, and overall a wonderful human being. He took her off of the vent on the last night of his 4-day stint and we assumed she would pass before he returned, which she did.
We all wanted him to be there for us and for her. When you spend that much time in the hospital, the staff becomes family and that is exactly how we feel about Will. He explained to us everything he was doing so we could understand and be aware of what to be concerned about and what not to be. He listened to us and was genuinely concerned.
The day before we took Granny off the vent, Will walked in and plopped down her favorite drink. He swabbed her mouth with the drink as we knew this was her final week with us. We know granny was smiling. After his shift, his last night to be with her, he came by on his way out to tell us if we needed anything to please reach out. He told us that he loved all of us and we felt like family to him as well.
Tears were flowing as we knew our time together was coming to an end. I truly cannot imagine the last several weeks without Will.
