William drove from his home to the hospital, picked up the dog, and drove him to his veterinarian.
I have worked with William for many years, and he always has gone above and beyond for his patients, family members, and fellow employees, but what he did in this instance, I will never forget.
On our unit, we have a patient who has a service dog. Most people are familiar with the dog and see him getting in his walks around the hospital with different team members. He is such a great dog and is so friendly and obedient with all he meets. When the dog William who got down on his knees and gave him all the love he could. But as we were petting him, we noticed his ear was really bothering him to the point that he was whimpering and did not want anyone to touch it. This nurse looked inside, and he had a full-blown infection along with an abscessed tooth. Without even thinking twice about it, this nurse got down on the floor with the dog, cleaned his ear out, and tried to soothe him as much as he could. But that was not where he stopped.
He then called the unit the patient was on and asked the nurse if he could speak to the patient. The patient told the nurse she was aware of the infection and had ear drops for him, but he asked if he could take the dog to the vet to get proper treatment for the animal. She happily agreed and was thrilled that he was going to get the medications he needed.
On Monday, William drove from his home to the hospital, picked up the dog, and drove him to his veterinarian. He spent the entire day there with him, got treatment, and medications, and paid the bill in full. I honestly was blown away by his kind heart and generosity for not only the animal but for the patient. This patient relies on her dog as a service provider. I am sure with medical bills and dealing with her own stressors of being ill, he provided relief to her knowing that the dog would feel better, and she would not have to worry about a vet bill on top of all the other big issues she may be dealing with in her life right now. This nurse is an extraordinary human!
