My father was a truly great man but five hospitalizations in seven weeks took their toll. After a blood pressure crash, he was brought to the critical care unit in pain, exhausted and scared. William met us (I say us because I felt the same way and we were both subsequently cared for) by taking care of dad's medical needs but also seeing the person. I felt the respect and admiration he had for my father and the trust he placed in learning and respecting his wishes. I was doing my best to hold myself together, which was noticed, and asked if he could give me a hug. That simple, yet profound, gesture of kindness made me feel less alone and like I had a partner in the care for the most important person in my life in the final chapter of his life's storm.
