Bill has become a very vital team member in the ICU. Despite some pretty difficult patients, I have never heard a complaint. In fact, more often than not, he volunteers himself. One of the greatest things about Bill is that he can make you laugh no matter how bad you are feeling. And, it's not only the nurses on our unit but the patients as well.
One specific instance I had the pleasure of witnessing involved one of my patients. This woman had been experiencing the symptoms of a stroke and had waited several hours to get a bed on our unit. Her demeanor was sad and withdrawn. Her life for the past year has been difficult and she found herself in and out of the hospital. All night she barely spoke unless prompted. Bill came in to help me with her and within minutes he had her laughing. It was wonderful and the best thing we did for her that night!
