He is more than an instructor, he is a beacon of benevolence and zeal within the nursing profession, with an unwavering commitment to us as students, the patients, and the overall profession.
Mr. Vickrey has been a nurse educator and faculty member at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) for 14 years. He is also a graduate of the BSN and MSN programs at MTSU. Mr. Vickrey teaches in both the BSN and MSN programs as a clinical instructor. In the undergraduate program, he is a critical care clinical instructor, and in the MSN program he teaches Advanced Health Assessment. Prior to MTSU, Mr. Vickrey worked as a critical care nurse for two different hospital intensive care units.
His DAISY nomination explains how he demonstrates all the qualities of an exceptional nurse educator. “Mr. Vickrey has changed my perspective on what nursing is. From day one of clinical, he has always been so kind and understanding towards us as students and toward our patients. . . . He works hand-in-hand with us, pulling meds, cleaning up patients, assisting in ADLs, asking about the patient’s family, engaging in friendly conversation and providing relentless care whether you’re present or not. He would leave updates on how the patient is progressing in my feedback, encouraging me that our interventions truly helped better the patient’s health. . . . He never makes you feel incompetent or inadequate. He finds opportunities for students to practice their skills. He never got frustrated, even when I wasn’t fully confident in my own skills. I never would have thought that someone would have believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Mr. Vickrey is also committed to my learning. He either explains it step by step or researches it with me until we find an answer. Not once did he get frustrated or impatient with me. . . . He is more than an instructor, he is a beacon of benevolence and zeal within the nursing profession, with an unwavering commitment to us as students, the patients, and the overall profession. Through kindness and integrity, he has shown how true, genuine care can have a profound impact on patients and their families. Their influence and guidance through my nursing journey will continually be embodied in my care for patients.”
Mr. Vickrey was also nominated for a university EXL Faculty Award in 2024 for excellence in experiential learning.
