I saw the patient interact with Wilmarie and he appeared surprised that she called the other hospital on his behalf. His whole demeanor changed and he expressed that he felt as if she was truly trying to help him.
Wilmarie Gil has exhibited that she is truly a DAISY Nurse during her time as a nurse at BMC. She demonstrated her clinical expertise by helping the administration with their care plans and suicide risk audits. She worked with the administration to help to audit and educating on care plans and audits. She patiently and effectively taught and supported staff through a period where many changes were going on due to a recent JACHO visit. She worked tirelessly to educate her peers so as they felt confident in their abilities. Wilmarie also exhibits extraordinary and compassionate care on a daily basis. She goes out of her way and puts 110% to be supportive of her patient and her peers.
There are countless stories of how Wilmarie has shown compassion and has gone above and beyond for her patients. There was one particular patient on unit 300, which is the high acuity unit at the BMC. This patient arrived irritable and angry as the previous hospital he was out misplaced his phone. This patient was not compliant over several days and would yell and curse at staff. When the patient would call the other hospital to ask about his phone and would immediately get frustrated and yell at the other hospital's staff. Wilmarie noticed this and understood the patient's frustrations regarding his phone. To help the patient, the BMC staff, and the other hospital's staff, Wilmarie made it her goal to help this patient locate his phone. Even when the patient was yelling and irritable with staff, Wilmarie called the other hospital and spoke to their staff about this patient's phone. I saw the patient interact with Wilmarie and he appeared surprised that she called the other hospital on his behalf. His whole demeanor changed and he expressed that he felt as if she was truly trying to help him. He was cooperative with her and he started being more cooperative with staff. He began to process with her more than he processed with the other nurses as she worked on building rapport with him despite his history of irritability. He stayed at the BMC for a couple of weeks and even on days when he was not Wilmarie's assigned patient, she would call the other hospital to check on his phone. Wilmarie would give him updates every day she worked. After weeks of phone calls, the other hospital called the BMC back eventually and stated they may have found his phone. One of the charge nurses reached out to the patient and forwarded the patient this information. Wilmarie knew that not having a phone was a significant stressor for this patient and exhibited compassion by calling for him daily.
This is only one example of how Wilmarie is a DAISY Nurse. The staff looks forward to working with her and it is truly a pleasure to work with her on the floor. She truly is an asset to the BMC, demonstrates all of Loma Linda's values, and deserves to be recognized for her hard work and compassionate nursing care.
