I was approached by Winter DeFeo to come assess a patient on her assignment. She was orienting a new nurse that day. While vital signs had been very stable, patient A/OX4, and responding appropriately to all commands, she stated she had concerns regarding the patient's clinical progression. She voiced that while she just couldn't quite pinpoint any change in patient status, that she "just felt something was different". I came to assess the patient and confirmed all she told me above: no active triggers, VS stable, patient denies any complaints. Winter and her orientee then continued to follow their nursing judgment and notify the covering physician of their concerns. I watched Winter continue to advocate for her patient throughout the course of the day, keeping the team abreast of continued progression and VS. Due to her astute observations and diligence in communicating her concerns, this patient ultimately was transferred to a higher level of care.
Winter tirelessly advocates for patients in her care. She does so daily, and is coaching a new generation of BH staff to do the same. She tirelessly demonstrates compassion and dedication to every single one of her patients, every single day.
