After Xiao got off work she spent a considerable amount of time with my sister and husband ensuring that they had an understanding of pre-eclampsia and what to expect.
This nomination is long overdue. Xiao has led the ICU Team in receiving the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Beacon Silver Award not only once, but twice. This national award is an honor and validates the incredible work that the entire ICU team is doing for members of our community. Xiao led the application process for the Beacon Award, but if you ask her, she is humble about this accomplishment and only wants recognition given to the frontline ICU team – not herself. I find her desire for excellence contagious and when it came time for our organization to apply for the Accreditation for the Practice to Transition designation, I was all in - Xiao did not need to convince me. She is truly a leader that leads by example.
The ICU recently implemented CRRT. We were informed that the order sets would need to be written on paper and the orders would be placed into the electronic medical record (EMR) by the ICU staff. Xiao understands the challenge of how difficult this task would be for the ICU staff. She also recognized that having two different processes for orders would be a potential for error and did not want to compromise patient and staff safety. Xiao persisted, as she understood from her prior experience that a CRRT EMR power plan could be developed. For those of us that know Xiao, we know that no is not in her vocabulary. She collaborated and worked diligently with Nephrology, Clinical Informatics, and Northridge Medical Center, and a CRRT power plan was built for our organization. I am happy to state that the CRRT power plan has been utilized in the ICU and the nursing staff have complimented the ease of use. Additionally, the ICU nursing staff has also complimented Xiao’s willingness to pair them up for 6 hours as they care for a CRRT patient. This innovative approach has increased their confidence and I have had multiple nurses inform me that they would like to become the CRRT super users of the ICU. This happens when the staff feels supported and Xiao deserves the recognition.
Last year my 41-year-old sister gave birth to her first child. My sister’s road to motherhood has not been easy as she has been through multiple miscarriages. My sister was at her OB appointment when she was informed that she had pre-eclampsia. She would have to deliver my niece 5 weeks early. Unfortunately, due to having Covid, I was unable to make it to the hospital as my sister's care partner.
My brother-in-law's first language is German and although he has a good understanding of the English language, when it comes to medical terminology he needs additional time to process what is being told to him. After Xiao got off work she spent a considerable amount of time with my sister and husband ensuring that they had an understanding of pre-eclampsia and what to expect. She even sent my brother-in-law home to eat and pick up their overnight bags while she waited with my sister. Xiao’s assistance through this process made a tremendous difference in alleviating their fears and it will always be appreciated.

Having worked closely with Xiao as a colleague at SJRMC, I nominated Xiao Lin for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. I have had the privilege of witnessing her exceptional dedication, outstanding leadership skills, and unwavering commitment to patient care.
Xiao has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled level of expertise and professionalism in her role as an ICU nursing director. Her comprehensive knowledge of critical care nursing practices, coupled with the ability to inspire and motivate her team, has been instrumental in elevating the standards of care provided within our ICU department.
One of the most striking qualities of Xiao is her exceptional leadership skills. She possesses a remarkable ability to create a supportive and collaborative work environment that encourages the growth and professional development of her nursing staff. Through her visionary approach, she has implemented innovative strategies to enhance patient outcomes and optimize the workflow within the unit. Under her guidance, our ICU department has achieved significant improvements in patient satisfaction, decreased mortality rates, and enhanced staff retention.
Xiao possesses an extraordinary level of empathy and compassion, which is evident in her interactions with both patients and their families. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that each patient receives the highest quality of care, while also offering emotional support to families during challenging times.
Moreover, Xiao has played a pivotal role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthening relationships with other healthcare professionals. Her collaborative approach has resulted in improved communication, streamlined processes, and enhanced coordination of care, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that Xiao is more than deserving of the ICU this Nursing Award.
